What will the fuel run on this trip?

Before you commit to a run, know what the fuel will cost. Enter trip miles, MPG, and diesel price for gallons, dollars, and the fuel cost per mile worth carrying in your head.

Estimates from numbers you type. Not tax advice. Not a filing. Not a tax-due figure.

The run

Total miles for the trip, including the empty miles to the pickup.

Miles per gallon you expect on this run.

Dollars per gallon you expect to pay.

Example numbers demonstrate the math. Everything you type stays in this browser.

The math, in the open

No hidden assumptions.

Every number above comes out of these lines. If you disagree with an assumption, change the input. The tool will not quietly override you.

estimated gallons = trip miles ÷ MPGestimated fuel cost = estimated gallons × diesel pricefuel CPM = diesel price ÷ MPG
Trip miles
Every mile you will run, including empty ones
MPG
One average for the whole run
Price
One diesel price per gallon for the whole run
Not included
Fuel surcharge, discounts, tolls, and def
Not an IFTA figure
This is trip fuel spend, not a tax calculation

What this estimate is not

  • Not tax, legal, accounting, or filing advice.
  • Not an IFTA calculation and not a tax-paid gallon figure.
  • Assumes one MPG and one price across the whole run.
  • Excludes def, tolls, surcharges, and discounts you did not enter.
  • Not a record. The receipt you confirm is.

Where the real numbers come from

  • Confirmed rate confirmations, which carry what a load actually paid.
  • Confirmed fuel receipts, which carry gallons, price, and location.
  • Records you can search, correct, and produce again later.
  • See how records get captured

Questions about this tool.

Why does fuel cost per mile not change with trip length?
Because it is diesel price divided by MPG. A 200-mile run and a 2,000-mile run at the same price and MPG cost the same per mile. Only the total changes.
Should I use loaded MPG or average MPG?
Use the average you actually see across loaded and empty running for this kind of trip. A loaded-only MPG will understate the fuel bill on a run with deadhead in it.
Does this calculate my IFTA tax?
No. This estimates what fuel will cost you. IFTA is about distance and tax-paid gallons by jurisdiction. The official portal applies the rates. A different question with a different answer.
Why is my real fuel bill different?
Terrain, wind, weight, idle time, traffic, and how the truck is driven all move MPG, and pump price moves by the day and the state. An estimate is a planning number, not a receipt.
